(HUNTSVILLE, AL)...The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) endorsed Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle for re-election at a news conference earlier today. The endorsement from the largest police organization in the world, with more than 330,000 members nationally and 8,700 members in Alabama, was made by local President Bill Davis.

"Mayor Battle is a man of his word," said Davis, surrounded by dozens of local law enforcement officials. "He has helped move Huntsville and our police department forward.

Mayor Battle promised in 2008 to hire more police officers to protect Huntsville's streets. The City of Huntsville currently has more police officers patrolling its streets than at any point in time in its history. Mayor Battle's commitment to Huntsville's residents and police will continue in 2012 with plans for a new public safety complex on North Memorial Parkway and some of the largest police academies in Huntsville's history. Mayor Battle had high praise for the organization.

"I am honored to stand here with these men and women who risk their lives every day to protect our city," said Mayor Battle. "We have worked to keep our promises to them and our residents and I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish in our first term.""I want to thank the Fraternal Order of Police, and all of our police officers, for the work they do and for the honor of their endorsement."

Local FOP President Bill Davis said that Mayor Battle has served Huntsville's police officers well during his first term as mayor. "Mayor Battle believes that our officers should be well protected and have the right tools for the job," said Davis. "Even through some of the toughest economic times we've faced in Huntsville, he has kept his word to us."

Davis concluded his remarks with a wholehearted endorsement. "Mayor Tommy Battle believes in our police officers," said Davis. "And we believe in Tommy Battle."
