Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle talks about creating more jobs.

One of the toughest things about being mayor is talking to someone that has lost or can't find a job. Starting in late 2008, America entered into some of the darkest economic days we've ever faced. Unemployment has been incredibly high. Job growth nationally has been stagnant. Families are struggling to put food on the table.

We haven't been immune, but we have been blessed -- and it's important for me to again say thank goodness we're in Huntsville, Alabama.

Being in Huntsville, however, isn't enough. Talking about our past successes isn't enough. Talking about our past successes doesn't put our citizens to work.

That's why today we're here to talk about JOBS and OUR plan to put more of our residents to work.

I can't emphasize enough that these past few years have been the toughest we as a country have faced in generations -- but we've been working every day to diversify our workforce, to protect the jobs we have -- and to build for the future.

Our plan to move Huntsville forward includes a strong focus on jobs. You may have seen recently that for April 2012 Huntsville's unemployment rate was 5.7% -- just one year ago our city was at 7.2%.

We are moving forward -- but we still have work to do.

Among the things we are working to do are:

- Diversifying our economy by recruiting new businesses to our city focused on high growth areas like Cyber Security, Energy and Geospatial technology.

But we also plan to keep and grow the local businesses we have -- like Arora Technologies -- where we are today, by continuing to provide one of the world's most educated workforces. Huntsville has more degreed professionals than almost any other community in the world.

Many of those professionals are here today because of NASA and Marshall Space Flight Center and I want to talk directly to those workers for a moment.

- We have fought for you before and we will keep fighting for you to ensure that you have a mission -- and that the greatest brain trust every assembled continues to ensure that America remains second to none.

- We've also fought to keep research dollars at our institutions of higher education, like UAHuntsville. Those research dollars are crucial to us because they help generate LOCAL jobs with GLOBAL impact.

We've also made it a priority to attract and keep young professionals in our community -- and we've succeeded in doing just that.

- The 2010 census shows a fifteen percent increase in the number of young professionals in our community.
