A British Columbia wildfire burning near the Alberta border shut down a highway on Friday, August 4, ahead of the holiday weekend. The Verdant Creek Fire has burned through 4,833 hectares or nearly 12,000 acres since it was discovered July 15.

A portion of Highway 93 was closed on Friday because of smoke, according to a news report. The highway, a major road through the Rockies, was closed earlier in the week because of snow, and park officials had warned the road could be closed again during the holiday weekend. An update on if the road could be re-opened was not expected until Sunday. Credit: Instagram/ty__lew via Storyful
