A Japanese diplomat was stabbed in a possible kidnapping attempt in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Sunday morning (December 15). A security source said the attack occurred near the diplomat's house, roughly 250 metres away from the Japanese mission, as he resisted a kidnapping attempt, according to Reuters.

Reuters cited an embassy source in reporting that a taxi carrying two armed men pulled over in front of the diplomat's car as he was driving alone on his way to the embassy, then attacked him with a knife.

However, other media outlets reported that witnesses said they saw six masked men attack the diplomat in a small street, dragging him away from his car before one man hit the Japanese man in the head with the butt of a pistol, then stabbed him with a dagger and pushed him to the ground.

Local residents who saw the attack said they provided the diplomat first aid in a nearby shop until an embassy car arrived to take him away.

According to the Japanese embassy, the diplomat, who they declined to name, suffered five stab wounds to his head and hand, and is in stable condition at hospital.
