A Russian consul and his wife were stabbed by a Central African Republic national in the capital of Sudan on Tuesday (January 28).

The couple was attacked outside the gates of the Russian embassy in Khartoum, Sudan. AFP reported that the assailant had approached the couple, asking them if they were from France. The consul and his spouse did not understand the question and the assailant then stabbed them. Security guards and passersby managed to detain the attacker.

The Russian Consulate did not reveal the name of the victim, however it was confirmed that the wounded consul was not the consul general, as some media reports had suggested. The couple only suffered minor injuries and were quickly discharged from hospital.

An investigation revealed that the attacker was a Central African Republic citizen who was in Sudan for medical treatment. His brother was killed by European troops in the CAR in the morning of the same day. Vowing to avenge his death, the attacker mistakenly thought that the couple was from a European Union country, which last week agreed to send 600 troops to the Central African Republic.

Since March last year, the CAR has been flung into chaos as Seleka, a coalition of rebel groups, ousted President François Bozizé. France, which ruled the country from 1910 to 1960, has sent troops to protect its citizens. Russian troops are not present on the republic's soil.
