What was happening in the world one hundred years ago? Hi this is Matt and here are 5 New York Times headlines from March 7th, 1913.

Number 5 - When President Obama is covered in media, the stories are shared all over facebook, twitter, youtube, and other social media. In 1913, President Wilson's coverage had quite a buzz as well but of a different kind. It involved 'moving-picture machines' or what we know as video cameras. The report noted - 'Successive clicks and the buzzing of moving-picture machines told that the official family of the new President was going into the pictorial history of the country.'

Number 4 - Chicago and other cities in the US wanted to address 'white slave' traffic. Thousands of woman were merely earning $5 a week or less and there was an effort to improve those dismal wages.

Number 3 - Wondering what was the popular laxative in 1913? If you guessed castor oil, you were right. An ad claimed - 'There is no safer or more effective
laxative known than pure castor oil - always mild, soothing, cleansing and lubricating - without its disagreeable taste.'

Number 2 - Deeming her to be 'feeble minded', an Austrian woman was denied entry to the United States by Ellis Island officials. A lawsuit was filed but the judge determined that Ellis Island had the final say on deciding who would enter the US.

Number 1 - One of the women's rights leaders was pushing to have female cops. In her view, during many of the crime situations, male cops were
ill-equipped to handle some aspects and women could do a better job.
