Number 5. March Madness, 1913 style. Instead of talking brackets and baskets, the buzz was about scratches and tilts. The game attracting the tourney attention was pocket billiards. Now we just call it pool.

Number 4. Devastating flash floods in Peru, Indiana claimed the lives of over 400 people. The rising waters claimed all phone and telegraph wires. Railroad transit became impossible. As these were they only means of communication and large-scale transport, the town was left to fend for itself.
