According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Mahachhath is celebrated on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, there is a law to worship Sun God's sister Chhat Maiya and Lord Surya. According to religious belief, Chhat fast is observed for the attainment of children, prosperity and long life. The festival begins with bathing on Chaturthi Tithi and after worshiping Chhath fast on Shashthi Tithi, fasting and offering Arghya to the setting sun, the next day on Saptami, the fast is concluded after offering water to the rising sun.

हिंदू पंचाग के अनुसार कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की षष्ठी तिथि को महाछठ का पर्व मनाया जाता है। इस दिन सूर्यदेव की बहन छट मैया और भगवान सूर्य की पूजा का विधान है। धार्मिक मान्यता के अनुसार छट का व्रत संतान की प्राप्ति, कुशलता और उसकी दीर्घायु की कामना के लिए किया जाता है। चतुर्थी तिथि पर नहाय-खाय से इस पर्व की शुरुआत हो जाती है और षष्ठी तिथि को छठ व्रत की पूजा, व्रत और डूबते हुए सूरज को अर्घ्य के बाद अगले दिन सप्तमी को उगते सूर्य को जल देकर प्रणाम करने के बाद व्रत का समापन किया जाता है।
