After a weekend of high political drama, Punjab has a new chief minister, Charanjit Singh Channi. Channi has held the portfolio of Technical education and industrial training ministry in the Amarinder Singh Cabinet. He is also a three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib constituency. But, Channi’s appointment also ticks the box of being a Dalit-face as the state heads to polls in 2022. Channi’s name was a surprise winner after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned on Saturday, September 18. The two-time chief minister of Punjab told reporters that the Congress leadership’s decision over the handling of the rebellion against him had left him feeling ‘humiliated’.
