A volcano on the earthquake-hit Indonesian island of Sulawesi erupted on the morning of Wednesday, October 3.

The eruption came just days after the 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck Palu, killing more than 1,400 in one of the country's deadliest natural disasters.

This video, filmed that day, shows schoolchildren watching as Mount Soputan, located in North Sulawesi, sent a column of ash into the sky.

The Center of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced that the eruption status had been elevated to Level 3, one away from the four-tier alert level.

Volcanic activity has increased in recent weeks leading up to the eruption, media reported, and locals have been advised to stay away from the vicinity to avoid contact with ash and potential lava flows.

It is not known if the earthquake and volcanic eruption were related.
