Severe thunderstorms tore through parts of New South Wales on Friday, September 7, leaving areas across Sydney covered with a blanket of hailstones.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued severe thunderstorm warnings and warned of heavy rain, flash flooding and large hailstones in a number of regions across the state.

Lightning strikes at a rate of 1,000 per hour were recorded in the 50 kilometre radius around Sydney causing delays at the airport, and flash flooding caused disruptions to the rail network.

Bankstown saw 58 millilitres of rain in an hour, according to ABC. In this video, Bankstown resident Arabella Zucchetto scoops up hailstones from her yard in a 1 litre container. Credit: Arabella Zucchetto via Storyful
