Heavy smoke settled over Lake Elsinore, California, on Wednesday, August 7, as the Holy Fire in the canyons above doubled to more than 9,600 acres.

Dangerous heat and low humidity have kept firefighters from containing the blaze – it stood at 5 percent Thursday morning – and several thousand people were under evacuation orders.
