Landslides Hit Hiroshima Prefecture as Record Rainfall Batters Japan

Torrential rain in western and central Japan caused landslides, flooding and swollen rivers, leaving at least three people dead and several others missing on Friday, July 6.

One of the casualties, Kazuhiko Miyane, 59, was found in a swollen river in Hiroshima prefecture. It is believed he was washed away from near his home, police said.

Landslides also struck other parts of Hiroshima prefecture; at least 10 people were reportedly buried alive by landslides.

This video, shared online on Saturday morning, July 7, showed a swollen river, landslide and flooding in Takehara, a town in Hiroshima prefecture.

Japan Times reported the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said nearly 170 people in Kansai and other regions including Osaka Prefecture were ordered to evacuate on Friday afternoon.

The Japan Meteorological Agency forecast record amounts of rain through Sunday, July 8, warning of more flooding and mudslides as well as lightning strikes through the weekend.
