Mount Agung in Bali erupted on Monday morning, July 2, at around 6:20 am local time, days after a series of eruptions last week forced the closure of three airports.
The volcano erupted for three minutes and 47 seconds, emitting a thick plume of volcanic ash reaching 6,500 feet above sea level, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, said on July 2.
“The volcanic ash doesn’t spread. All airports operate as normal,” Sutopo added.
Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and two smaller airports in the neighbouring East Java province were closed on June 29, affecting tens of thousands of travelers.
