Baby bison have started emerging in Yellowstone National Park. A live video on the park’s official Facebook page on Friday, April 27, shows three “red dogs,” a term used for the bison calves.
Bison calves are born with red fur before it turns brown within a few months. It’s early in the season for bison births and more should be born in the coming months, a ranger says during the video. He also says the three bison were less than two weeks old and might even be days old.
A bison calf was euthanized in 2016 after tourists picked it up and put it in the back of an SUV. Reports at the time said the tourists believed the calf was cold and needed to be taken to a ranger station. Park officials had said the calf was later rejected by the herd and had become adapted to humans.
