A stolen vehicle was driven into Swift Creek, on the Mississippi River, ending a police pursuit through La Crosse, Wisconsin, on July 9.
The City of La Crosse Police Department, who posted dashcam footage of the chase on July 11, said that they had attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the stolen car, when the driver, named as DeShawn Huff, fled at speeds exceeding 60 mph.
Police say that the suspect got out of the car as it was sinking, but was unable to stay afloat, despite rescue ropes thrown to him by officers. The La Crosse Fire Department Dive Rescue Team retrieved Huff, who was taken to a hospital where he remained in a critical condition on July 11.
