On May 4, a Colorado river snorkeler informed the authorities after seeing what he thought was three skeletons at the bottom of the Colorado River on the border of Arizona and California. A closer look by fire department divers, revealed the truth — this was a practical joke.

The skeletons seem pretty relaxed in their lawn chairs, and there is a sign that references the movie Weekend at Bernie's, as well as a date: August 16, 2014, possibly the day that the enterprising divers set the elaborate underwater hoax up.

La Paz County Sheriff's deputies are taking it in stride, saying while it is illegal to leave things at the bottom of the river, they understand it was a joke.

"Although the call itself was resource intensive, both the sheriff's office and Buckskin Fire were happy to find that the remains weren't real and thanked the reporting party for making the call," the sheriff's office press release stated.
