The Finnish navy set off depth charges on Tuesday after a suspected submarine was detected in waters near Helsinki.

The incident comes amid escalating tension in the Nordic region caused by an increasingly belligerent Russia.

Finland said its military had detected some underwater activity - possibly a submarine - on Monday and again on Tuesday in waters near Helsinki.

Sailors responded by dropping depth charges. The hand-held explosive charges were not intended to cause damage but to serve as a warning to the intruder.

The target vessel then reportedly left the area but Finnish authorities said an investigation into the incident will be launched.

Defense minister Carl Haglund did not say whether Russia was involved. Sweden conducted a week-long search for a suspected ‘Russian’ submarine in waters near Stockholm last October.

The flaring tension has prompted Sweden and Finland to deepen defense cooperation with NATO.
