Richard Allen Beevor - Single Route Through The Valley

Flame red, blue and green
came the light from the sky,
around different hearts were beating wild,
trees massed in session,
paths few and overgrown,
none remembered the way back home.

Leaves fall, crushed to the ground,
snakes live and die in harmony,
night became unbearable tension,
great cats stalk our way,
held off only by fire glow,
relieve us becomes our cry,
we would face death daily,
in the claws of these wild beings.

Daylight brought us protection,
a feeling only of safety from danger,
we moved on ever nearing
the end of this cursed jungle,
we had not eaten for three days
but the cats had gone hungry longer.

I write these few words
as the fire dies forever
and they close in.
