Two people were injured in a shooting amid protests outside the Royal Army Club in Bangkok on Tuesday (January 28) as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was holding meetings inside.

The prime minister was meeting with members of the Election Commission to discuss plans whether to go forward with a general election scheduled for Sunday. Riot police stood guard as anti-government protesters gathered at the army facility's gate.

A gunman fired shots amidst the rally and one protester was struck by a bullet. While trying to escape, the gunman was beaten by protesters and then arrested by protest guards.

"Someone fired shots. One protester was hurt and the man who fired the shots was hurt too. They have been sent to different hospitals," Chumpol Jumsai, a protest leader who was at the facility in north Bangkok, said in a Reuters report.

The prime minister called for an election, which her party looks set to win, in an attempt to put an end to protests that have gripped Bangkok since November. The Commission has been pressing for a delay, arguing that the country is too unsettled to hold an election.

"We believe chaos will ensue ... Our new recommendation is to hold elections within three or four months," Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, a member of the Election Commission, said in a Reuters report.

Since protests have begun in November, ten people have been killed and hundreds have been wounded.
