Bhagat Singh Kandhari witness of Uttarakhand flood disaster.

" My name is Bhagat Singh Kandhari".

He says " I had 2 homes here, both had 6 rooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 kitchens. Initially because of the high flow of river, around 11:30 AM the bridge got totally damaged. We did not give much attention to it as for some reason it might have been swept away but it did develop a fear in our minds. The water kept on coming but we never thought that the water level will rise to such an extent. At 9:30 PM a dreadful amount of water came our way. In a state of panic we could not take our belongings from our shop and home and just escaped from the area. All I can say that the water took away all my life's earnings. I have no clue as to what the government will do to provide us with relief. They are trying to help by providing us with rations but our losses can't be covered with that. They are providing us with wheat and rice. Even if they provide 100 kgs of wheat and rice, it will all get spoilt. It will be better if the government, rather than providing us with biscuits help us with a tent to live in and such other amenities.
Around 2:15 in the night, heavy rain started pouring down and the houses started getting destroyed. I watched all this from the fields above. Every 5 minutes there was a house getting swept away. The only thing in our mind was to save our lives. We all stayed in the fields above and in the morning at 7 we saw that the entire area below was destroyed. All the people were in their homes, but as soon as they got to know around 8:30 PM, all of them left their house. There were not many lives lost but none of our goods and belongings could not be saved.
I have nothing to say about this place. It is impossible for any reconstruction to take place now.. When I recall the incident, I feel that water is coming from my behind me, even if there is no water. It is difficult to stay in my senses when I recall the incident. Even if I dream of it, I feel really frightened. There is extreme fear in my mind and I feel that someone has snatched bread from our mouths and taken all our life's earnings" .
