Anita Semwal witness of Uttarakhand Disaster.

She says " 0n the 16th night, there was water all over our place. We left our home at 9 PM and then went to our neighbour's place to drop our kids and went back to see the condition of our house. Till then, the water was above knee level, so we could not enter the house and went back. People say that the government started giving warnings around 7, but we could not hear it because of the heavy rains. At 7 PM when there was water everywhere, they were giving out warnings, but nothing could be done at that point of time. How much will they save, what all can they save? Who does not want to save their personal belongings? But we could not save anything, all this you see around is destroyed. when water started rising upto knee level we left the house. We hurried the kids out of the house. We then came back. There were 4 cows owned by 2 families inside. We thought of letting out the cows but there was so much water that we could not enter. 4 of our cows died. We did not as there was a lot of foul odour and we buried them inside only. The government has provided Rs 50 thousand for my family and Rs 50 thousand for my brother-in-law's family. Even though we are different families, but the government people say that as you are under one roof, only this amount will be provided.
20,000 for the cows. We had in total 3 cows and one calf. The cowshed was also damaged but nothing else was provided. They have no role in providing food, there is a relief camp put up by an NGO, we go there and have food. We have no place to stay either. We go to a friend's or a relative's place to stay. We are in such a miserable condition that we cannot afford to pay the rent for a house".
