The Falklands war under late former British Prime minister Margaret Thatcher started when the Argentina's ruling military junta invaded the Islands.

Though British controlled, the islands lie off the Argentine coast in the South Atlantic and the Latin American nation has long claimed sovereignty over them.

Britain responded with military force - winning back control of the territory by June 1982.

Of the more than 600 Argentines who died in the conflict, 323 perished when their cruiser – the General Belgrano – was torpedoed and sunk by a British nuclear submarine.
