Pakistani teenage activist Malala Yousufzai is to have a custom made titanium plate to cover a large hole in her skull, as she continues her rehabilitation.

The 15 year old - who has frequently spoken of her passion for education - was shot by the Taliban in October and flown to Britain for specialist treatment.

Doctors at Queen Elizabeth's Hospital in Birmingham said on Wednesday that covering the hole in her skull would greatly improve her quality of life.

The operation is due to take place at some point over the next ten days.

Medical director Doctor Dave Rosser paid tribute to Malala's resilience.

"She remains incredibly cheerful, incredibly determined and incredibly determined to continue to speak for her cause. She really is a remarkable young lady."

Surgeons will also fit a cochlear implant which will help Malala - who is currently deaf in her left ear - fully recovering her hearing.

Her medical team believe that if all goes well, she should make a complete physical and psychological recovery within the next 15 to 18 months.
