A church in Soweto has held a special prayer service for Nelson Mandela, who is in hospital with a lung infection and gallstones.

The hero of the anti-apartheid movement and former South African president was taken for treatment in Pretoria two weeks ago.

The president's office said the 94-year-old is steadily improving.
