China's eight-day long national holiday turned deadly on the roads today, when a tourist bus crashed on a highway outside of Beijing. Five German tourists and their driver died in the crash, after their bus hit the back of a truck and burst into flames, according to state-run media.

Witnesses posted pictures of the accident online, showing flames and smoke engulfing the bus. State-run Xinhua News Agency reports the bus was traveling to Tianjin with a group of German tourists. It was unclear how many people were on board.

Two Chinese passengers and another 12 German tourists were injured in the crash, and have been taken to nearby hospitals.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Road safety is a big problem in China, especially during the busy holiday seasons. Around 70,000 people die each year due to bad driving habits and poorly maintained roads, according to official statistics.
