Demonstrations against an anti-Islam turned violent in Peshawar as protesters set fire to two cinema houses.

The government has declared Friday as "Love the Prophet Day" to protest against a film entitled the "Innocence of Muslims," which mocks the Prophet Mohammad and has given rise to a spate of violent demonstrations across the Muslim-majority country.

Local television channels said one protester was wounded when a cinema guard opened fire.

Police resorted to tear gas shelling and aerial firing to disperse the crowd.

Thousands are expected to take to the streets across the country after Friday prayers in response to the government's call for "peaceful protests" to register their anger against the offending movie.
