Exiled Tibetans protested outside the official residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi today. They are against Indian officials meeting with China’s Defense Minister Liang Guanglie. China is hoping to strengthen military and economic ties with its biggest Asian neighbor, something that concerns Tibetans.

For many years India has been a refuge for Tibetans who have fled their own country after Chinese occupation. Chinese leaders say they have brought democracy and economic prosperity to a formerly backwards country. In the mean time Tibetans have witnessed and have experienced the destruction of their culture and homeland under Chinese communist rule.

Since 1959 Tibet’s spiritual and political leader, the Dalai Lama, has lived in exile in northern India. Last Wednesday he said he's looking forward to China’s upcoming change of leadership. He believes the Chinese regime is softening its stance on the Tibet issue and that he will soon be able to resume talks with Chinese officials. He believes from insider information that the proposed leaders are listening to Chinese intellectuals and might reconsider China’s stance on Tibet.
