Australia inspects island for asylum detention centre

Australian soldiers have arrived in the Pacific island of Nauru to inspect it for its suitability as a detention centre for asylum seekers.

The government hopes such offshore processing will deter people from trying to get to Australia by boat.

The move has been tried before, with mixed results.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Sydney.
