North Korea names its young leader Kim Jong-Un as the First Chairman of the ruling National Defence Commission.
The national assembly held a meeting on Friday (April 13), following the failure of a much anticipated rocket launch.
The appointment caps the rise to power of the twenty-something year old Kim Jong Un, who inherited North Korea's leadership when his father died last December.
Kim Jong-il would remain chairman for eternity of the military commission, the state news agency said.
The failed rocket launch raises questions over the new leadership in the reclusive state. It has one of the world's largest standing armies, but it cannot feed its people without aid.
Friday's missile launch was widely condemned by Japan and South Korea, and the U.S. said it will not go forward with plans to provide food aid, and will take additional steps if North Korea takes further acts of provocation.
Following the embarrassment of the unsuccessful satellite launch, North Korea is now widely expected to move forward with its third nuclear test.
