As the confetti is dropped over Times Square a few days early, onlookers are treated to a preview of New York City's upcoming New Year's Eve festivities. Let's take a closer look.

As handfuls of confetti were tossed over New York's Times Square, the colorful paper appeared to pass the New Year's Eve confetti "air worthiness test" on Thursday.

Each year, a few days before New Year's Eve, organizers of the Times Square festivities toss the lightweight square pieces of paper into the air, just to make sure it floats and flutters properly.

Onlookers were excited by the unexpected confetti test.

[Jessica Arroyo]:
"It's awesome. I thought it was snowing for a second, but it's exciting to know that there is going to be tons of confetti for New Year's Eve, real excited."

[Debbie Bloomfield]:
"Beautiful. That's great, yeah. Fantastic."

[Beau]:
"It's fun. I think it'll work."

On New Year's Eve, one ton of confetti will be spirited into the air to help the estimated one million people in Times Square bring in 2012.
