Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says unrest in Syria has become more militant in recent weeks but he is "not worried". He believes that ultimately a political solution will prevail.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Sunday he expected a parliamentary election to be held in February 2012 after a series of reforms that would let political groups other than his Baath party take part.

In a speech televised live Assad insisted there was no specific timetable for an election, but hoped to have proposals in place within days.

[Bashar al-Assad, Syrian President]:
"There is no approximate timetable this week. Over the next few days until Thursday I believe we must, regarding the law of political parties, put together the committee concerned with accepting the proposals of political parties. This committee is composed of a judge, the minister of interior, and three other independent figures."

The president said he was "not worried" by his country's security threat.

[Bashar al-Assad, Syrian President]:
"This might seem dangerous, regarding your question about the security perspective. However, we can deal with this and we have begun to make achievements recently. We won't announce now because it's necessary for us to succeed with maintaining security. However, I am not worried about these events."

He believes that there is only a political solution.

[Bashar al-Assad, Syrian President]:
"There is nothing called a security choice or the security alternative. There is only a political solution. Even the countries which go and wage a war with its armies, they go and wage a war for a political goal, not for a military goal."

Assad last spoke in public in June.

He said he would introduce reforms within months to address the wave of protests sweeping Syria...
