Dozens of extremist Israeli settlers, many of them masked, rampaged through the West Bank Palestinian village of Jit near Nablus on Thursday night, setting fire to homes and vehicles. A Palestinian man was also reported killed during the attack.
The settlers hurled stones and Molotov cocktails, torching at least four homes and six vehicles in the village, which is located just west of Nablus. According to an Israeli security official, more than 100 assailants were involved. The IDF announced on Friday that it had detained one suspect in connection with the riot.
U.S., Britain, France condemn ‘abhorrent’ settler rampage. The EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, called the riot “unacceptable” on Friday and suggested sanctions against Israeli government “enablers” of settler violence.
Israeli leaders from across the political spectrum condemned the riot. Prime Minister Netanyahu said he viewed the incident “with severity,” while President Herzog “strongly condemned” the violence, urging swift action to “bring the lawbreakers to justice.” Defense Minister Gallant also denounced the “handful of extremists.”
