Colin Jones turned pro in 1977 and won the British welterweight title when he stopped Kirkland Laing in the ninth round, despite Laing dominating the first few rounds. Five bouts later, Jones won the vacant Commonwealth title when he stopped Mark Harris. His next fight was a rematch with Laing that was almost identical to their first meeting, with Jones winning again in the ninth round. Jones was disqualified in his next fight for hitting Curtis Ramsey when he was down. Jones won the European welterweight title with a second round stoppage of Hans Henrik Palm.
Milton McCrory was a tall welterweight with a long reach, and was trained by Emmanuel Steward at his Kronk gym. He was unbeaten in 20 bouts, with his first 17 wins coming inside the distance. These wins were against journeymen and fringe contenders, but there was a steady improvement in the quality of opposition. McCory's biggest win to date was a points win over future world champion Roger Stafford in his 19th bout.
