Colin Jones turned pro in 1977 and soon gained a reputation as a boxer with a hard punch and a hard chin. He won the British welterweight title in 1980 in his 14th bout when he stopped unbeaten Kirkland Laing in the ninth round in their first meeting. Jones was completely outboxed right up to the round he won the fight. After three early wins against decent opposition, Jones stopped Mark Harris and claimed the vacant Commonwealth title. Up next was the rematch with Laing.
Kirkland Laing turned pro five years ealier. He won the British welterweight title in 1979 in his 16th bout when he stopped Henry Rhiney. After winning three non-title fights, Laing made his first defence against Colin Jones and was stopped in the ninth round. Laing came back with two wins before beating Joey Singleton on points in a final eliminator for the British title.
