Date: December 6, 1983
Venue: Royal Albert Hall, London
Bruno stance: orthodox
Santemore stance: orthodox
Frank Bruno turned pro in 1982 and had won his first 19 bouts inside the distance. The first big name on his record was former world title challenger Scott LeDoux, who he stopped in the third round in his 15th fight. Bruno had suffered the first "scare" in his pro career in his 19th bout, when he was wobbled quite badly right at the end of the first round against Floyd Cummings. Bruno recovered, and went on to stop Cummings in the seventh round.
Walter Santemore turned pro in 1977, and had faced a number of contenders, usually losing. His best win was in 1982, when he outpointed Earnie Shavers. He had a few wins against opponents with decent records who were expected to beat him. Santemore was also a sparring partner for a number of world-ranked heavyweights, including Gerry Cooney. His previous bout had been a third round loss to future WBA champion James Smith.
