Frank Bruno vs Juan Figueroa in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout
Date: March 13, 1984
Venue: Wembley Arena, London
Bruno stance: orthodox
Figueroa stance: orthodox
Frank Bruno turned pro in 1982 and had won his first twenty fights, all inside the distance. The biggest name on his record was former world title challenger Scott LeDoux, who he stopped in the third round. In his 19th bout, Bruno was wobbled early by fringe contender Floyd Cummings, but weathered that storm and ended proceedings in the seventh round.
Juan Figueroa was an inch taller than Bruno, but also 14lb lighter. He turned pro in 1976, and most of his early bouts took place in his native Argentina. He won the Argentian heavyweight title at the second attempt in 1981, and made several defences of that belt. He had lost his most recent fight to world-ranked Jose Ribalta, but before that had won six consecutive bouts.
