सर्दी के मौसम में ज्यादातर बच्चे सर्दी-जुकाम और वायरल से ग्रस्त हो जाते हैं. हालांकि जहां सर्दी-जुकाम कुछ दिन में सामान्य हो जाता है वहीं निमोनिया महज 4-6 दिन के अंदर ही जानलेवा हो जाता है. आंकड़े बताते हैं कि हर साल 5 साल से कम उम्र के हजारों बच्‍चों की जान निमोनिया के चलते चली जाती है. वहीं विशेषज्ञों की मानें निमोनिया में बच्‍चों की जान बचाई जा सकती है लेकिन ज्‍यादातर मामले देरी के आते हैं. बच्‍चों में सामान्‍य सर्दी-जुकाम समझने और निमोनिया की पहचान न होने के चलते समय पर इलाज नहीं मिल पाता और उनकी जान चली जाती है. ऐसे में जरूरी है कि निमोनिया के शुरुआती लक्षणों को पहचानकर तत्‍काल बच्‍चों को डॉक्‍टर के पास ले जाना चाहिए.
