BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra in the recent press conference lashed out on the current Bengal government, the TMC, highlighting about the violence that was going on during the panchayat elections. The West Bengal panchayat election which were held on Saturday was marred by widespread violence, resulting in the deaths of political workers, looting of ballot boxes, and destruction of ballot papers.
Polling booths were vandalized and ballot papers set on fire at places as people queued up to vote for the crucial three-tier panchayat polls. Besides, ballot boxes were set on fire allegedly by the BJP workers at a polling booth in Cooch Behar district's Dinhata area. The incident took place following allegations that TMC indulged in vote looting and sealing the ballot box with the help of goons. Two children were injured at Bhangar area in South 24 Parganas district after crude bombs exploded near them. They have been rushed to local hospital. 59,000 CAPF personnel deployed at sensitive booths according to BSF.The Panchayat elections saw 36.66% voter turnout till 1 pm. These are dangerous signs for a democracy. Ensuring a free and fair voting process is the responsibility of the state government and failing to do so is a clear sign of incompetence from the West Bengal Goverment.
