The bomb maker responsible for the deadly attacks in Bali in 2002 was released on parole on December 7, 2022, after serving part of his 20-year sentence. Indonesian authorities said Umar Patek, a former member of an al-Qaeda-linked group called Jemaah Islamiah, was ‘successfully reformed’ in prison. The bombings killed 202 people in Kuta Beach, 88 of them Australians.
