Otitis media (inflammation of the ear) can lead to infection and inflammation of the central part of the ear, causing severe pain in the ear , a condition known as "acute otitis media". When there is an ear infection, it collects pus and mucus behind the eardrum, due to which the ear canal becomes blocked and there is pain and swelling in the ear.
