Observed on December 18 every year, Minorities Rights Day aims to promote and preserve the rights of people belonging to minority communities in India. The day also helps spread awareness about their rights. Under Section 2(c) of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Act, 1992, the term ‘minority’ includes all non-Hindu communities such as Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, and Jains.

संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ द्वारा अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों के अधिकारों की रक्षा के लिए शुरू किया गया अल्पसंख्यक अधिकार दिवस हर साल 18 दिसंबर को मनाया जाता है। इसके तहत अल्पसंख्यक क्षेत्र विशेष में उनकी जाति, धर्म, संस्कृति, भाषा, परंपरा आदि की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करना मुख्य उद्देश्य होता है। संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने तब कहा था कि देशों को अल्पसंख्यकों की संस्कृति, धर्म आदि की रक्षा करने के लिए कदम उठाने होंगे। ताकि उनका अस्तित्व खतरे में न आए।
