Lee Sun-woo was a prisoner of war in North Korea. An estimated 50,000 former South Korean prisoners of war were never returned by Pyongyang after the 1950-53 conflict. They and their descendents were forced to work in coal mines for decades - an industry that was a major earner for North Korea until sanctions blocked exports three years ago.
