The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery was initiated by the United Nations General Assembly on 2nd December. The Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others was passed by the Assembly on 2nd December, 1949. Likewise, by resolution 57/195 of 18th December 2002, the Assembly notified 2004 the International Year to memorialise the struggle against Slavery and its Abolition.

पूरे विश्व से दास प्रथा को समाप्त करने के लिए हर साल 2 दिसंबर को अंतरराष्ट्रीय दास प्रथा उन्मूलन दिवस मनाया जाता है. पुराने समय से चली आ रही दास प्रथा आज भी किसी न किसी रूप में बनी हुई है. संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने हर साल 2 दिसंबर को अंतरराष्ट्रीय दास प्रथा उन्मूलन दिवस मनाने की घोषणा की गई. मानव तस्करी और प्रॉस्टीट्यूशन को रोकने के लिए संयुक्त राष्ट्र जनरल एसेम्बली की तरफ से प्रस्ताव पारित किया गया जिसमें 2 दिसंबर को दास प्रथा उन्मूलन दिवस मनाने का ऐलान हुआ.
