South Korea will invest more than 8-point-8 billion U.S. dollars by 2025 to foster smart cities nationwide and create some 150-thousand new jobs.
President Moon Jae-in unveiled the plan - a key part of his Korean New Deal initiative - as he visited the country's first smart city in Songdo, west of Seoul.
The site of his visit dubbed "Integrated Opeations Center" is a control where data is collected in real time from thousands of sensors and surveillance cameras across the city.
We will swiftly push for smart cities nationwide. The government will supply data integrated platforms to 108 localities across the country, enabling 60 percent of the people to experience smart cities.
The government plans to build more smart cities: one in the southeastern port city of Busan next year and another in the administrative capital of Sejong by 2023.
Smart cities incorporate ICT, big data and other technologies to manage issues related to transportation, environment and crimes.
It also plans to speed up the digitalization of public infrastructure, such as roads and railways.
