Protests broke out in the fishing village go Hangberg in Houtbay after City of Cape Town law enforcement officers moved in to demolish occupied informal housing structures.

A pre-school was torched during the protests. Law enforcement officials at first retreated and then returned with support of the Public Order Policing Unit of the South African Police Service as well as a contingent of soldiers in armoured vehicles.
