It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva on this day removes all the sins and distress of his devotees. People observe Mahashivaratri fast and start worshiping God in the morning. On this day it is considered auspicious to perform Lord Bhole Nath's Jalabhishek with Belpatra. Before listening to the fast on the next day of Shivratri, people listen to the Mahashivratra Vrat Katha, then after offering it to God Get offerings.
