Heroic Indian doctor stays in China to fight coronavirus despite mother begging him to come home

A courageous Indian doctor chose to stay in China and treat victims of the novel coronavirus outbreak, instead of returning back to his country, even after pressure from his mother to come home.

Amish Vyas, who is a native of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, is currently living in Hangzhou in southeast China with his wife and daughter, and volunteers at a quarantine camp for suspected coronavirus sufferers.

Amish studied medicine in China, and works as a plastic surgeon, having lived in Hangzhou since 2014.

He spoke in an interview of his commitment to the medical profession despite the risk of coronavirus infection: "As a doctor I'm not afraid of any infection.

"I would like to say to my fellow physicians and surgeons that we are all one team, all over the world."

His mother, Kavita Vyas, expressed concern for her son due to the lethal outbreak, and spoke in an interview on February 12 about her conflicted feelings over her son's decision.

Kavita: "I talk daily with my son. I am in a dilemma now, but it's my son's passion, and he had a promise to himself to serve and help people. His passion is for national and health-related issues, and if it's his passion than we also have to promote and support it."

K: "This morning I asked him to come back, but he said if there is a war in country would any brave soldier run away? Then I was left speechless."
