The skirmish between police officers and lawyers outside the Tis Hazari Court on Saturday has escalated into a major row. Thousands of personnel from the Delhi Police protested against the alleged assault outside the police headquarters. The protests have now been called off. At least 20 police personnel and several lawyers were injured in the clash on Saturday. The protesting officers have submitted a list of demands, including the formulation of a police protection act. Repeated requests from top police officials to join duty fell on deaf ears. Service rules bar policemen from holding protests – in fact a number of state police associations, IAS Association, IPS association have lent their support to the protesting police personnel. The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Bar Council of India and other Bar Associations on the home ministry's application about a court order, that directs that no coercive step be taken against lawyers who face charges in Saturday's Tis Hazari Court incident.
