Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam insists the decision to propose, suspend and ultimately withdraw a contentious extradition law amendment bill was made by her and her government, not the central Chinese government in Beijing.  Lam made the remarks in a press conference on September 5, 2019, the morning after she announced she would withdraw the bill which has sparked nearly three months of protests that often turned violent.
